How long does group therapy last? Group therapy often occurs on a weekly basis from 1 ½ - 2 hours. The length of time group therapy lasts often depends on the type of group it is. There are typically two types of groups: open or closed. An open group refers to groups allowing members to join at any time and may be ongoing. A closed group refers to the same members being in the group from the beginning through the end of the group and usually has a set number of weeks. The average group runs from 6-12 weeks.
What about confidentiality? At the first group session, the rules of the group are laid out. Members have to agree that anything discussed in the groups, especially names or any specific information, is not to be shared outside of the group. A confidentiality form is signed by all members to ensure safety and confidentiality. |
