Depression and bipolar disorders are mental disorders, real physical illnesses that affect a person’s moods, thoughts, body, energy and emotions. Both disorders, especially bipolar disorder, tend to follow a cyclical course, meaning they have ups and downs.
Common Symptoms of Depression

Examples of a Depressive Disorder
- Major Depressive Disorder: is defined as having symptoms of depression for more days than not during a 2 week period.
- Persistent Depressive Disorder: is having underlying symptoms more often than not during a 2 year period.
- Bipolar Disorder: is having periods of depression and periods of mania (elevated mood).
- Postpartum Depression: is showing symptoms of depression during their pregnancy or after the birth of a child
- Premenstrual Depressive Disorder: is having depressive symptoms that are more prevalent surrounding a woman’s menstrual cycle.
- Seasonal Affective Disorder: is having symptoms of depression that are more prevalent around the winter months.
- Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder: is recurrent outbursts of anger that seem to be out of proportion to the situation.
